Franklin County residents now have a way to responsibly recycle electronic waste, thanks to a collaboration between Reworld and Goodwill Keystone Area.
Goodwillโs network of stores and donation centers across 22 counties in central and southeastern Pennsylvania now accept a variety of consumer electronics to be recycled, free of charge.
In Franklin County, electronic goods can be recycled at the Goodwill Store and Donation Center at 1021 Wayne Avenue, Chambersburg. The store is open Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sundays noon to 6 p.m.
The following e-waste is accepted:
- computing and peripheral devices such as computers, monitors, keyboards and printers;
- entertainment electronics such as DVD players, gaming systems and audio devices like stereos and MP3 players;
- communication devices including telephones and mobile devices;
- visual and imaging equipment, including cameras, televisions and cable boxes;
- small appliances such as toasters and vacuum cleaners; and
miscellaneous electronics, including cables, electronic wiring and answering machines
Items that are not accepted include: loose batteries; bulbs; smoke detectors; hazardous household waste; freon-containing devices; devices containing mercury; and white goods such as refrigerators, ranges, water heaters, freezers, air conditioning units and other similar domestic and commercial large appliances. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency provides information on recycling these items on its website, bit.ly/3wxozO5.
Additional information, including locations of other Goodwill stores and donation centers, is available online at www.yourgoodwill.org/donate/e-waste-we-do-dont-accept.
